These pieces are examples of one-of-a-kind Raku fired vessels. They are
made on the potter's wheel and altered when soft. Raku is an
exciting process in which pots are fired to 1800 degrees F.,
pulled white-hot out of the kiln with tongs, and put in a closed
container filled with sawdust to smoke. The deficiency of oxygen during
the smoking phase chemically alters the oxides and nitrates in the glaze
to produce wonderful varied and unpredictable effects impossible to
attain in any other way.
More pieces in this series are available. They range from 4"
to 12 " in height and the prices are $65 to $400 depending on
size and complexity. Images of other pieces are available on
request. Liz teaches Raku classes at Sage college in Albany. Those
interested in taking a Raku class can contact Liz for information about
upcoming sessions.
